As an organization, we take our dual mission very seriously - it drives the way we operate, and it is the basis for the benchmarks against which we measure our success. We are proud to have successfully served more than 50 satisfied customers and to employ over 100 people, several of whom have been promoted and nearly all of whom are continuing their education.
Digital Divide Data is more than just a data processing company – we are a non-profit social venture that aims to use technology to improve lives of some of the world’s least developed nations. We are breaking new ground by bringing well-paid technology jobs to countries where they didn’t previously exist and to groups who struggle just to survive.
Founded in the summer of 2001 by a group of North American volunteers, DDD opened its first facility in Phnom Penh, Cambodia by hiring a pair of local managers and a group of 20 initial employees. These employees came from Wat Than’s disabled persons training program (for Polio and landmine victims) as well as the Cambodian Volunteers for Community Development’s youth training program . From that initial base of 20 workers, we have grown over the last two years to nearly 100-workers, and have served dozens of clients from both Cambodia and North America.
DDD’s employees not only benefit from having a job experience and a wage income far above local standards, but they also receive scholarships for education, health benefits, and work in a safe, ergonomic environment.
After successful implementation of the organizational model in Phnom Penh, DDD is now looking to expand its to reach other vulnerable and needy populations. First, in cooperation with the Asia Foundation, we are conducting a computer skills training program for sex-trafficked women and prostitutes, and are proud to have graduated and employed the first graduates of the program in our Phnom Penh facility. Furthermore, thanks to initial funding from the Mekong Project Development Facility (MPDF) we have opened new data processing facilities in Battambang, Cambodia and Vientiane, Laos in late 2003.
Our nearly three years in Phnom Penh have been a tremendous success, and this has inspired us to expand these successes to more communities in need.
